The Key Ingredients to a Successful Culture

A few years ago, we did something pretty cool. We asked employees to describe the EnableComp culture in one word, to write it on a sticky note and place it on a designated wall in our office. No instruction beyond just that; our culture, one word.

Something amazing happened…

The words casually placed on the wall revealed something familiar, our Core Values! Nothing can make HR’s heart swell quite like employees believing in the organization’s values and walking the talk every day. It was evident we are doing something right! That was further cemented when we were named a Top Workplace in Middle Tennessee!

We have been very deliberate about building a great work culture. It all starts with our Mission and Core Values. We partner with healthcare providers to maximize reimbursement from worker’s compensation payers by having the best people, processes, products and performance. In one simple statement, we articulate what we do and how we will achieve our goals. Employee feedback from our annual Engagement Survey tells us 84% of employees believe our mission makes them feel their job is important. Woo hoo!

We have six Core Values with simple, short definitions that are explained with supporting behavior statements, making expectations clear. Who doesn’t want clear expectations? Our Core Values are the foundation of our business and explicitly define the principles from which we live by daily.

Infused in every employee-related process, our Core Values are at the root of everything we do; from recruiting, on-boarding and training to evaluation, recognition and retention. Our Core Values drive our hiring process where we are focused on culture first. We intentionally hire people who fit our organization in terms of competence, chemistry and culture. No one can embody and cultivate our work environment like our employees, so the hiring decision is an important one.

The power of one word can speak volumes about a company’s culture.
